Javier de la Torre, Professor of the Faculty of Theology, is one of the coordinators, together with Anor Sganzerla and Caroline Filla Rosaneli, of the new work entitled Bioética como espaço de resolução de conflitos étnicos e sociais (Bioethics as a space for the resolution of ethnic and social conflicts), published by Editorial Dykinson (2024, ISBN: 9788410703896), in Portuguese. In addition to being coordinator, Professor de la Torre wrote the chapter "Biopolitics of euthanasia: lack of bioethical deliberation and concealment of social conflicts".
Below is a summary of the new work (original in Portuguese):
The book "Bioethics as a space for the resolution of ethnic and social conflicts" brings together the efforts of experts in Bioethics and national and international researchers with the aim of analysing how bioethics, as an interdisciplinary science, represents a privileged space for understanding, confronting and resolving conflicts around ethnic and social issues. The aim is to introduce into the debate invisible realities in our societies, such as issues of gender equality, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, cultural and religious diversity, in their individual, collective and institutional dimensions.
The different perspective of Bioethics, the clear and courageous positions of the authors on the issues, the dialogue with thinkers of the bioethical tradition, make this work renew the ideals and purposes of the pioneers of Bioethics, keeping alive the desire to live in more just, inclusive and respectful societies for all citizens. It is bioethics in its commitment as applied ethics, and as ethics involved in reality.
