The university community has come together to show the importance of fighting for equal rights, justice and gender equality
8 March 2024
Comillas Pontifical University wanted to join in the commemorations of the 8th of March, International Women's Day, with two meetings, one at Alberto Aguilera 23, and another at Cantoblanco, in which a large group of female students and members of the PAS and PDI, together with the members of the Board of Governors, met to listen to the declaration of the CRUE and to take a family photo.
Those in charge of reading the declaration were the Vice-Rector for Students and Alumni, Belén Urosa, and the employee of the School of Engineering (Comillas ICAI), Mª Cruz Soro, who read it at Alberto Aguilera, and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Comillas CIHS), Susanne M. Cadera, and the 2nd year student of Translation and Interpreting and International Communication at Comillas CIHS, Martina Olaizola De Diego, who did the same at Cantoblanco.
The CRUE declaration focuses on a fundamental day for women's struggle for equal rights, justice and gender equality. "Women have a lot to offer to the development of our society and that this commitment also has an economic dimension, because excluding or reducing their participation means, in the end, social and cultural impoverishment, yes, but also economic impoverishment. Increasing the participation of women in all kinds of social dynamics is not only an ethical imperative, but also an economic resource: society loses a great deal if it forgets the talent and effort of half of its population," the text states.
The declaration also recognises the importance of education in achieving a free society, "a society in which no one has unfair privileges or obstacles", it says. In this sense, the university "must crown the efforts of the entire education system, through a multidisciplinary vision in which all areas of knowledge, all specialities, make their contributions", it reads.
