Presentation

The Industrial Doctorate, or Industrial Mention in the Doctorate, is a type of official doctoral programme that promotes collaboration between the university and the company in the field of the doctorate, contributing to the development of research capacities in the company and to the solution of problems.

It is articulated through a collaboration agreement, according to which an employee of the company develops his/her doctoral thesis within the framework of a research project within the company, supervised by the university, or carried out in collaboration with it.

The industrial doctorate can receive public aid, as well as benefiting from possible tax deductions for in-company research.

Industrial Mention

In accordance with Royal Decree 99/2011, the mention "Industrial Doctorate" will be awarded provided that the following circumstances are met:

  1. The existence of an employment or commercial contract with the doctoral student. The contract may be signed by a company in the private or public sector, as well as by a public administration.
  2. The doctoral student must participate in an industrial research or experimental development project carried out in the company or public administration in which the service is provided, which may not be a university. The industrial research or experimental development project in which the PhD student participates must be directly related to the thesis being carried out. This direct relationship will be accredited by means of a report that must be approved by the university.

If the industrial research or experimental development project is carried out in collaboration between the university and the company or public administration in which the PhD student works, a framework collaboration agreement will be signed between the parties. This agreement will indicate the obligations of the university and the obligations of the company or public administration, as well as the procedure for selecting doctoral students.

The doctoral student will have a thesis tutor appointed by the University and a supervisor appointed by the company or Public Administration, who may, where appropriate, be the Director of the thesis in accordance with Doctoral regulations.
