On 15 February, the Cantoblanco campus hosted the Student Selection Day for the VUELA programme, where a team of 23 evaluators made up of lecturers (PDI) and administrative and services staff (PAS) from Comillas worked intensively to review the applications.
This year, 133 students completed an exhaustive form with more than 30 open questions, in which they expressed their motivations, expectations and fears. This reflection exercise alone represents a key step in their commitment to volunteering.
The day was structured in three evaluative blocks. Firstly, an icebreaker was used to assess skills such as teamwork, attitude and predisposition. Subsequently, the students participated in a role play based on case studies of projects in Guatemala and Ghana, where they analysed different challenges of the volunteering experience. During this phase, learning ability, flexibility, cultural sensitivity and interaction with others were assessed. Finally, the evaluators conducted individual interviews, a key moment to get to know each candidate in depth and ensure the best assignment of volunteers to the different projects.
VUELA's selection process not only seeks to guarantee an enriching experience for the students, but also for the communities and organisations with which they will collaborate. This effort would not have been possible without the commitment of fellow Comillas employees (PAS and PDI), members of the Comillas Solidarity Network, who participated on a voluntary basis to accompany the students in this crucial phase of their journey towards volunteering.
With the selection process concluded, VUELA now enters its training phase for the chosen students, where it will once again have the support of the Comillas Solidarity Network.
