Last Wednesday, 19 June, in the Cloister of the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady of Baeza (Jaén), the Forum "Spirituality in everyday life" took place, organised by Editorial PPC and the Diocese of Jaén.
In this forum, the University Institute of Spirituality of Comillas (IUE) was present through the participation of its Director, Fernando Millán, PhD. Also participating in this event were Jesús Motiel, writer and poet, Luis María Salazar, Professor at Loyola University, and María Dolores Ocaña, media delegate of the Bishopric of Jaén, who moderated the event.
Professor Millán's intervention dealt with the explosion of spirituality, which can be interpreted in a negative way as narcissism, where the centre is not Christ, but the feelings and self-perceptions of the person. This negative form promotes consumer literature, Millán said. In his intervention, the Professor also detailed the interpretation in a positive form, as the yearning for transcendence or meaning that our time experiences, through the intuition that the material does not exhaust the person. The Director of UIE also developed some keys to evaluate the authenticity of spirituality, such as Christian charity, communion, ecclesiality or serenity, as a consequence of an integration of life. He was also asked about relevant topics such as contemplation, where Professor Millán explained that contemplation leads to seeing the presence of God in the midst of everyday life.
