Bachelor in Theology (Bachelor of Theology)
The Bachelor in Theology possesses sufficient ability and orientation in the main areas of Theology to be able to satisfactorily pursue specialised subjects at an immediate higher level.
What is the Bachelor of Theology at a distance?
This is the canonical title of Bachelor of Theology awarded by the Holy See, which the Spanish State recognises as a Degree in Theology. The programme, which has the approval of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, is developed in accordance with the fundamental ecclesial documents for theological training in the Ecclesiastical Faculties: the Apostolic Constitution Veritatis gaudium and the recent Instruction for the application of the distance learning modality in the Ecclesiastical Universities/Faculties (2021).
The Bachelor's studies in theology at a distance (Baccalaureatus in Theologia - Philosophical-Theological Quinquennium), responding to the criteria of the Pope and the Dicastery for Culture and Education, are aimed at lay men and women, but also at religious men and women, consecrated persons, etc., involved in pastoral work in their respective parishes, dioceses, Catholic schools, Church NGOs, etc. In addition to pastoral agents, these studies are especially designed for members of monasteries of contemplative life and those who are located, in the expression of Pope Francis, in the "human peripheries". The subjects are distributed over five courses with a format and methodology created specifically for distance learning, combining distance teaching with direct, telematic or physical face-to-face contact with the student. The greater or lesser proportion of physical face-to-face teaching, following the ecclesial documents and the plan approved by the Dicastery, depends on the type of student and his or her specific conditions. Within each course, each topic offers reading and study materials, together with exercises specifically designed for personal self-study.
At the end of the course, and after taking an examination before a tribunal on the whole of theology, the student is awarded the canonical title of Bachelor of Theology by the Holy See. This qualification is recognised by the Spanish State as a Bachelor's Degree in Theology, and is therefore an official university degree valid throughout the European Higher Education Area.

Entry profile
1º. Hold a university higher education qualification (official university degree, official university bachelor's degree, official university diploma or similar). In the case of foreign students, they must present a certificate issued by the competent academic authorities (Ministry of Education or similar) accrediting the university level of the diploma issued and certifying that with this degree they have access in their country to postgraduate studies, previously legalised through diplomatic channels.
2nd. Accredited level of Spanish B2. Foreign students who cannot prove that they have completed university studies in Spanish or have worked or lived for a sufficient period of time in a Spanish-speaking country or environment and wish to begin the Philosophical-Theological Five-Year Course in distance learning format must accredit their language level through the DELE Diploma (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera), awarded by the Instituto Cervantes, or by another equivalent Language Institute, in which case the Head of Studies, in consultation with the Instituto de Idiomas Modernos de Comillas, will decide whether or not it is equivalent. Otherwise, they will have to take a Spanish test under the supervision of the Instituto de Idiomas Modernos de Comillas, with which they will have to demonstrate linguistic competence at level B2 or higher.
3º. The "pastoral agents" who wish to follow this "on line" programme, in addition to the valid certificate of good conduct required of all those who wish to enrol in the Faculty of Theology (VG 31), must also present a certificate from their bishop, their parish priest, a religious superior, director of a Catholic educational or charitable institution or other type of institution, or other ecclesiastical authority, which accredits their pastoral dedication in the respective diocese, parish, ecclesial work, etc.
4º. Similarly, those persons included in the category that ecclesiastical documents call "human peripheries" [1] must write a letter to the director of the programme explaining the conditions and circumstances that justify their inclusion. The person who signs the valid certificate of good conduct (VG 31) or other ecclesiastical authority must confirm these circumstances in writing.5º. Members of monasteries of contemplative life shall also present a document certifying their membership of that monastery or contemplative order. The valid certificate of good conduct (VG 31) will be sufficient for this purpose, if it is signed by the abbot or religious superior of his monastery or order.
6º. To have a personal interview (in person or online) with the Head of Studies of the Programme. Candidates for the priesthood will not normally be admitted to this distance programme, given that, due to their fundamental dedication to the study of philosophy and theology as preparation for the ministry, and the guidelines given by the Spanish Episcopal Conference for face-to-face formation in seminaries and centres of theological studies (Forming missionary pastors: Priestly formation plan, esp. 230-245), they do not normally enter the groups for whom this online modality is offered. Those members of monasteries of contemplative life who are preparing for the priesthood and who, in agreement with their superiors, and with their written request, apply for admission, may be admitted to the Programme.
7º. Present the required documentation in due time and form.
Price: 2.300,67€.
The complete programme, based on the 2023-2024 prices, would mean a total cost of 12,325€, although the prices will vary, as they are revised each year. (It is recommended to consult the official prices on the website and in the Academic Guide of the Faculty of Theology) In the Faculties of Theology and Canon Law, the Rector of Comillas may grant a scholarship for study assistance in justified cases.
Those who are in this situation should contact the Comillas Office for study grants.
