The Ministry of Equality, through the Government Office against Gender-based Violence, has recognised the research of Sandra García Cantón with the first prize for doctoral theses on violence against women for her research: "Traducción de sentencias judiciales y perspectiva de género: estudio jurídico-traductológico de la traducción de sentencias del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos".

Sandra completed her studies in Translation and Interpreting at Comillas, later studied the Master's Degree in Legal-Financial Translation and, subsequently, did her PhD, which culminated in this thesis directed by the lecturers of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Comillas CIHS, Bettina Schnell and Nadia Rodríguez. The research analyses how original sentences written in English or French that deal with cases of discrimination or violence against women are translated into Spanish. The Comillas alumni highlighted the importance of an accurate and contextually sensitive translation, especially in cases where linguistic nuances can influence the perception of the rights of women and girls. The sentences of the European Court of Human Rights are only binding on the states to which they are addressed, but serve as interpretative guidance for other states that have signed the European Convention on Human Rights.

The prize, awarded by the Ministry of Equality through the Government Office against Gender-based Violence, has recognised Sandra's significant contribution to the field of legal translation and the gender perspective. It has also highlighted her originality, her technical and analytical rigour, and her valuable contribution to the gender perspective in the field of translation studies.

You can listen to Sandra García talking about this research in the podcast "1, 2, 3, Comillas: Voces en femenino".
