Master in Contemporary Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

What is the Master?

Since its origin, psychoanalysis has understood psychological suffering in the light of unconscious conflicts, defence mechanisms, the impact of the past on the present, or our essential tendency to repetition. In recent decades, this set of principles has been combined with contemporary developments in neuroscience, cognitive psychology or developmental psychology to give rise to empirically validated models of psychoanalytic therapy, as well as specialised applications for specific clinical problems.

The programme integrates both sides of psychoanalytic knowledge (the classical view and current developments) to offer students an integrated, informed and practical training in psychotherapy.

The Master in Contemporary Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (MPPC) aims to train students in the use of the basic assessment and clinical intervention tools of contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Aimed at both recently graduated psychologists and professionals with years of experience, this degree is an up-to-date and dynamic training offer. The teaching staff is made up of professors who are practising professionals, and the programme aims to enable participants to apply a psychoanalytical approach and work to therapeutic intervention in a practical and rigorous way.

Further information

The main objective of this Master's degree is for students to acquire therapeutic skills specific to contemporary psychoanalytic orientation. These skills will be aimed at addressing specific forms of discomfort and the management of relevant clinical processes: the analysis of conflicts and unconscious defences, interventions focused on mentalisation, the approach to relational patterns and patient attachment, the analysis of the dynamics of transference and countertransference or trauma-focused intervention, among others. The training will be mainly applicable to individual psychotherapy with adults, without forgetting the acquisition of tools to help families and adolescents, or in the context of institutional or group intervention.

The learning methodology will combine traditional teaching with the study of texts, individual and group exercises, simulations and role-playing, analysis of clinical material, clinical practice under supervision, or individualised tutorials with members of the teaching staff.
