Alberto Aguilera's campus gym once again hosted the Madrid University Chess Championship, organised by the Universidad Pontificia Comillas together with the Community of Madrid and the Madrid Chess Federation.
A total of 95 students registered for the regional chess tournament, which brought together chess players from all the universities of the community. Furthermore, 12 of the participants were women, representing a higher percentage than the number of federated chess female players in the region.
The tournament was played in eight rounds over two days. Cecilia Guillo Longares, from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, was the champion in the women's category and David Rodrigo López, from the same university, was proclaimed the winner in the men's category. The Rector's Trophy, which rewards the best classified from Comillas, went to Benjamín Gunduz. In the team category, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid was the winner of the championship.
The Vice-Rector for Students and Alumni, Clara Martínez, was in charge of closing the tournament and handing out the prizes. Clara congratulated the winners and thanked the Community of Madrid and the Madrid Chess Federation for their support in organising the tournament. For his part, Agustín García Horcajo, president of this federation, highlighted the great organisation of the tournament, the commitment of the players and the excellent treatment received from our institution and the organisers of the championship.
