The rector of Comillas Pontifical University, Enrique Sanz, SJ, was one of the 700 academic leaders that attended the V Universia International Rectors’ Summit, held in the city of Valencia (Spain) on 8, 9 and 10 May 2023, to talk about the role of the university as a driving force for a more sustainable social and economic development.
The conclusions of the meeting are set out in the Valencia Declaration on University and Society, which identifies diverse fields of action where the university can develop value propositions to contribute to a more sustainable social and economic progress of society through training, research and innovation.
The rector of Comillas gives a positive assessment of the event, due to its topics, meeting with people and the possibility of networking. Sanz also highlights the positive relationship of Comillas with Universia and Santander Universities, “a collaboration that we want to continue developing in the future.” In his opinion, the connection between all the Spanish universities has been very effective for the current situation, specially with the universities closest to Comillas, such as Deusto, Loyola and Ramon Llull. He also highlights the meeting with Jesuit universities from Ibero-America, such as the Javierana in Bogotá, the Ibero in Mexico, the Brazilian universities and the Catholic University of Uruguay. “We, the rectors. have met and strengthened the ties we already have, taking the opportunity to start some new projects,” he summarises.
