Pope Francis has appointed 19 new Congregation consultants for Catholic Education, one of whom is Enrique Sanz Giménez-Rico, SJ, Rector of the Universidad Pontificia Comillas. Sanz, who is professor of Sacred Scripture, was dean of the Faculty of Theology from 2015 to 2021.
The appointments, announced last Saturday, come at an important time for the congregation. In January the instruction "The identity of the Catholic school for a culture of dialogue" was published, a document of great importance for ecclesiastical educational establishments, which will have to be elaborated on in the coming months.
This appointment comes in recognition of Comillas, and in particular of the Faculty of Theology (Comillas CIHS), for its work carried out in recent years which has served to make great advances in learning, research, quality and curricula. The faculty is among the best in the world according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022, which places it, for the fourth consecutive year, among the best in the world in the field of Theological Studies (Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies).
Other professors at Comillas work as consultors for Vatican bodies. Gabino Uríbarri, SJ, also Professor of Theology, has been a member of the International Theological Commission since 2014, and Carmen Peña, Professor of the Faculty of Canon Law, has been a consultant to the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life since 2018.
About the Dicastery
The Congregation for Catholic Education is one of the nine congregations of the Roman Curia. Its remit extends to two sectors: the universities, faculties, institutes and graduate schools for ecclesiastical or civil studies which depend on ecclesiastical natural or legal persons, and the institutions and associations with scientific purposes and schools and institutes of instruction and education of any order or undergraduate degree which depend on ecclesiastical authorities, whose objective is the training of lay youth, excluding those which depend on the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples.
The current superiors of the dicastery are its prefect, Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, Monsignor Angelo Vincenzo Zani, secretary, and Father Friedrich Bechina, FSO, under-secretary.
