Doctorate Program in Power Systems

Ensuring access to affordable, secure, sustainable and modern energy for all, and taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, are among the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030).

General information

What does this program consist of?

The PhD program in Electrical Energy at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería (ICAI) will allow you to research and contribute to the achievement of these objectives. You will have the opportunity to join a research group of international prestige and you will be able to collaborate in applied research projects with key companies and institutions in the energy sector.

Research to achieve access to affordable, safe and sustainable energy for all.

The quality of our own faculty is complemented by the participation of professors from some of the most prestigious universities in the world, creating an international environment in which many students from other countries also participate. In addition, you will be able to spend time at internationally renowned centres and obtain the official recognition awarded by the Ministry, such as theInternational Mention in the doctoral degree or the Thesis in co-supervision with a foreign university. Finally, the program can also be taken as an Industrial Doctorate.

Research Lines

This focuses on research work related to the analysis, control and modelling of electrical power systems, as well as the analysis and development of models for the simulation and optimisation of the electrical networks of the future.

These lines are developed through applied research projects and in collaboration with leading companies and institutions in the sector. In addition, our PhD students work in an international environment, joining the research groups of the Institute for Research in Technology (IIT) or one of our Chairs. All this creates an ecosystem that combines teamwork, academic excellence and internationalisation, and ensures a real transfer of knowledge to society.

TRAINING ACTIVITIES

Training activities must be carried out by all students in the Doctoral Program and are not subject to academic evaluation. Some are mandatory and others are optional. These activities provide training to students in certain specific aspects of Research in general. Their cost is included in the enrollment fees for the Program. The types of training activities planned in this Doctoral Program are:

The following guide shows the detailed steps that students must follow to register the activities that they carry out during their Doctoral studies: Guide to Managing Doctoral Activities for the Student.

The list of optional activities is not closed, it can be completed with others not mentioned that are part of the work of the doctoral thesis (e.g. books, book chapters, patents, etc.).

All these activities are carried out in parallel to the research work, so their planning must be agreed between the PhD student and his/her supervisor(s).

In order to learn more about the procedure and steps of the doctorate, you can consult the Quick Guide to a PhD at Comillas.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING COURSES

The additional training courses are typically master's level courses that will be mandatory for those doctoral students who are assigned to them upon admission to the program. The need or not to take these courses is determined by the Academic Committee of the program according to the student's admission profile.

The additional training courses are established individually for each student according to their profile and the research area that they will develop

Lines of research
The main research lines of this program are the following:

Research Line 1. Modelling, analysis and control, and smart grids.
This focuses on research work related to the analysis, control and modelling of electrical power systems, as well as the analysis and development of models for the simulation and optimisation of the electrical networks of the future.

Energy regulation and economics and decision support systems.
This line of research focuses, on the one hand, on the design and analysis of regulatory measures that make it possible to incorporate strategic, economic and environmental considerations in the management of the energy sectors and, on the other hand, on the development of models that serve as effective aid in decision-making and in the technical-economic analysis of the generation, transport and distribution systems of the energy sector.
