Doctorate Program in Engineering Systems Modeling
The doctoral programs of the School of Engineering (ICAI) are the result of the collaboration between Comillas ICAI and different industrial sectors.
What does this doctorate consist of?
In business, industry and society, decision-making processes rely on models to account for the complexity of problems, uncertainty and ambiguities of decision criteria. In this PhD program you will develop models and use advanced simulation and data analysis tools and methods to solve complex problems and make decisions in the context of engineering systems.
A PhD in collaboration with different industrial sectors
The PhD program in Engineering Systems Modelling at the School of Engineering (ICAI) will give you the opportunity to join a research group of international prestige and to collaborate in applied research projects with key companies and institutions in the industrial sector and other related sectors.
The quality of our own teaching staff is complemented by the participation of professors from some of the most prestigious universities in the world, creating an international environment in which numerous students from other countries also participate. In addition, you will be able to spend time at internationally renowned centres and obtain the official recognition awarded by the Ministry, such as the International Mention in the doctoral degree or the Thesis in co-supervision with a foreign university. Finally, the program can also be taken as an Industrial Doctorate.

Research Lines
- Electronic systems and automation: real-time process control systems; perception and signal processing systems.
- Materials, manufacturing and computational mechanics: design and modelling of new materials; calculation and dynamic simulation of structures; biomechanics and modelling of complex systems with non-linear finite elements.
- Bioengineering applications: biomaterials, nanotechnology and metrology in healthcare.
- Energy and environment: environmental assessment and feasibility analysis of energy processes; energy engineering and sustainability; integration of renewable energies.
These lines are developed through applied research projects and in collaboration with leading companies and institutions in the sector. In addition, our PhD students work in an international environment, joining the research groups of the Institute for Research in Technology (IIT) or one of or Chairs. All this creates an ecosystem that combines teamwork, academic excellence and internationalisation, and ensures a real transfer of knowledge to society.

Training activities must be carried out by all students in the Doctoral Program and are not subject to academic evaluation.
The following guide shows the detailed steps that students must follow to register the activities that they carry out during their Doctoral studies: Guide to Managing Doctoral Activities for the Student.
The list of optional activities is not closed, it can be completed with others not mentioned that are part of the work of the doctoral thesis (e.g. books, book chapters, patents, etc.).
All these activities are carried out in parallel to the research work, so their planning must be agreed between the PhD student and his/her supervisor(s).
- Calendar of Training Activities organized by the ICAI School of Engineering.
In order to learn more about the procedure and steps of the doctorate, you can consult the Quick Guide to a PhD at Comillas.
The additional training courses are typically master's level courses that will be mandatory for those doctoral students who are assigned to them upon admission to the program. The need or not to take these courses is determined by the Academic Committee of the program according to the student's admission profile.
The additional training courses are established individually for each student according to their profile and the research area that they will develop

The doctorate is a challenge in which one evolves not only on an academic and professional level, but also on a personal level. It is not a path to be travelled alone, so it is an unparalleled opportunity to learn from great professors and researchers.
Roberto Barrella
During my years at the MOD I have been able to work in an inspiring environment where my research has become a reality and I have been able to contribute to improving the understanding and tackling of fuel poverty in Spain and in the EU.

The doctorate at ICAI is allowing me to take my first steps in research through the completion of a doctoral thesis that seeks to provide a practical solution to a problem in the industrial sector, but without losing sight of the social approach that underlies it.
