What is the Master?

Comillas Pontifical University offers a Master's Degree in Vocational Discernment and Spiritual Accompaniment, in collaboration with the School of Formators of the San Ignacio Spirituality Centre in Salamanca. The aim of the program is to prepare people to be able to give spiritual courses that will enable them to form other people within religious congregations and other forms of life present in the Church, helping them in their vocational discernment and fostering in them fidelity to their respective vocational commitments.

The program is aimed at priests, religious and lay people who work directly in the promotion, formation or accompaniment of vocations. It is also aimed at those who provide vocational accompaniment and support personal formation processes through spiritual exercises, spiritual direction and the training of pastoral agents.

This master's degree, in addition to providing theoretical knowledge and recommending readings to complement these theory classes, includes practical training supervised by the lecturers. The student will carry out six cases of vocational assessment and will be able to have the supervision of the accompaniment that he/she develops.

Methodology

The program covers two areas of training:

  • Theoretical training will take place over three consecutive summers, lasting six weeks per summer. Classes will begin on the first Monday in July each year, and will be held in the mornings from Monday to Saturday. Afternoons will be devoted to personal reading to deepen the themes of the classes. The studies related to the master's degree are not compatible with other activities during the summer.
  • The practical training will take place from September to June, and is compatible with other activities. Each student will spend two or more years in frequent vocational growth colloquiums with one of the teachers of the School of Trainers. In addition, the teachers will supervise the practical application of the academic training. The student will carry out six vocational assessment cases and will be able to have the supervision of the accompaniment that he develops.

  • Because Comillas studies are in high demand and places are limited, the best candidates have to be selected through admission tests.

  • Each class has its own tutor, whose function is to integrate the student into the group and to pay attention to their academic performance. Furthermore, at Comillas, the teaching system is distinguished, among other characteristics, by the personalised attention and the fluid and permanent relationship between teachers and students.

  • The teaching system at Comillas is especially oriented towards the relationship with the reality of companies, institutions, organisations and professional practice. The Internship and Employment Office is responsible for providing students with internships related to their studies in order to enrich their training. In the 2017-18 academic year, 6,296 student internships were managed in companies.
    In addition to these internships managed by the Internship and Employment Office, all degree courses have a significant number of compulsory external internships as part of their curriculums.

  • The Internship and Employment Office informs, guides and collaborates in the insertion in the labour market of recent graduates or in the projection of the professional career of Comillas graduates, for which it has an online tool that puts candidates in direct contact with 5,078 companies with which Comillas maintains a relationship. During the 2017-18 academic year, 1,838 job offers were managed. Of the total number of graduates from the 2018 graduating class, 93.22% are employed, either working or furthering their studies, within six months of completing their studies.
