Official Master's Degree in the Electric Power Industry
Comprehensive view of business activities in the electricity sector
What can the Master offer you?
The Master in the Electric Power Industry responds to the need to update the training of professionals in the electricity sector and those recent graduates who want to access it, to cope with regulatory and technological changes.
The profound regulatory changes of recent years have given rise to organised electricity markets (generation and commercialisation) and the need to design or adapt the regulation of these and other businesses, such as transmission and distribution. In addition, the electricity sector is undergoing significant technological changes (renewable energy sources, active demand-side management, development of smart grids, etc.).
Starting from a basic training in engineering (or, with an additional effort, in other disciplines), students will gain in-depth knowledge of the economic, regulatory and technological foundations of the new business areas, and will acquire direct experience of their application through a tutored personal project - the Master's Thesis - in institutions and companies in the sector or at the Institute for Research in Technology (IIT).

Professional and academic opportunities
Among the different sectors in which you can start your professional career, the energy sector, and in particular the electricity sector, has several characteristics that make it very attractive. The universal boom in the use of electricity, the creation of electricity markets, the opening of new business areas in companies, the implementation of new generation technologies such as renewable sources, the interaction with other sectors such as gas, the need to regulate specific activities in this industry and to include environmental impact criteria, the internationalisation of energy markets, etc., are just a few examples that allow us to imagine the variety of areas in which it is possible to develop an exciting professional career. As all these changes have taken place in recent years, there is a need to update the training of a new generation of experts and professionals capable of developing, researching and innovating in the electrical energy sector on an international scale. With this vocation in mind, the Master's Degree in the Electricity Sector was designed, taking as its starting point the long tradition of Comillas ICAI and the Institute for Research in Technology (IIT) in the training of professionals and researchers for the electricity sector.
Graduate profile
The MEPI program trains students to develop their professional careers in the field of planning and operation of generation, transmission, distribution and commercialisation activities, as well as in system and market operation, or in the analysis and development of regulation related to each of these activities.
On the basis of the knowledge and skills acquired, graduates can undertake, or relaunch, their professional careers in electricity generating and marketing companies, in operators and companies that own transmission and distribution networks, in system and market operators, in entities that regulate the operation of the electricity system, as well as in consultancy firms that provide advisory and analysis services on all these subjects.
Access to the doctorate
On the other hand, although it is not a research master's degree, the knowledge acquired in it can be useful in doctoral programs in electrical engineering or other programs in which the problems of the sector are addressed. In this way, the master's degree could also be the starting point for a research career in this field.
