When Lucía Bagües, a graduate in Primary Education, and Leyre Fernández de Arroyabe, a graduate in the Dual Degree in Law and International Relations, considered the topics on which they would base their end of degree projects, they decided to go a step further and choose a topic linked to sustainability.

Lucía designed a didactic programme focused on the area of mathematics for students in the 3rd year of Primary Education using the SDGs as a tool. Through different problems focused on climate issues, she established relationships between the world of numbers and the different Sustainable Development Goals. Bringing students closer to the reality that surrounds them, in an applied and educational way.

For her part, Leyre focused her work on migratory displacements due to the adverse effects of climate change, where she carried out an analysis of European legislation in relation to climate refugees and their difficult situation. After reviewing the different regulations, she concluded that it is necessary for the European Union to regulate the situation of these migrants.

Both works were chosen by the jury as first and second prize, respectively, for the best sustainable TFG awarded by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Comillas CIHS), not only because of their innovative characteristics, but also because both can contribute a lot to improving and raising awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and taking action to reduce the effects of climate change.

As Heike Pintor, delegate of the Integral Ecology Unit at Comillas CIHS and coordinator of the awards, points out, these awards "respond to the growing concern for the protection of the environment and in line with the objectives of the University's strategic plan and Pope Francis' Laudato Si'. Its aim is to raise awareness and generate changes in the attitudes and behaviours of students, faculty and staff through activities such as talks, colloquiums, gymkhanas, courses and educational workshops in our organic garden.

The call for the next award is now open, you can find all the information on the website of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
